Palisades: A Personal Paradise
By Marissa Ammon
In my opinion, the Palisades Center in West Nyack, NY is one of the best malls in this region. Not only because of its size and stores, but because I have many memories at this mall.
This four floor mall opened in 1998 and I’ve been going there since I was a young child. Lots of our home videos were filmed on this site. There were many times I went to this mall every single weekend. My love for the Palisades started when Jeepers, an indoor arcade and amusement park came to the mall. The IMAX movie theater was another favorite of mine. This is the theater where countless class trips were held, including the first time I saw “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” and “Robots.”
Unfortunately, both of these have closed for business.
Since then, the mall evolved and got renovated. New additions include a two-floor Forever 21, The Palisades Club Adventure Ropes Course and the Levity Live Comedy Club, where I met comedian Sheryl Underwood. This spot was also featured in the 2019 film “Hustlers.”
According to the Palisades Center’s website, this shopping plaza is among the top 10 most visited malls in America. It is certainly the most visited mall for me. This Rockland County attraction is home to over 200 stores and 16 sit-down restaurants including The Cheesecake Factory, Chili’s, Johnny Rockets and Dave & Buster’s. Located on the third floor are two food courts parallel to each other separated by a Ferris wheel, which I went on a few times, though I haven’t in years because of my fear of heights.
Retail has evolved and some stores close down fast during the age of online and app shopping.
However, this mall still goes strong and maintains up-to-date attractions such as pottery painting and escape rooms. Palisades is the third largest mall in New York State and the 11th largest in the country. Since I have many memories in this shopping center, this place has given me an identity and love for the mall. Spending a lot of time there shaped the person I am today. Although the Palisades Mall is about an hour south, I plan to make a few trips while living in New Paltz.
