While it looks like we're spending our holidays at home this year, that doesn’t mean we can’t still get in the mood for spooky season. If you are looking for a book to read that will get you ready for autumn weather and Halloween, this is the book for you. “Mexican Gothic” was published this summer by Author Silvia Moreno-Garcia, who has written speculative fiction novels in both adult and young adult fiction. Her newest work is a Horror novel that plays with classic tropes of gothic fiction. “Mexican Gothic” is the perfect scary story to pick up and immerse yourself in this fall.
Set in the 1950’s, Noemi is the perfect debutante, a glamorous party girl more concerned with her next date than finishing college. When her newlywed cousin writes a letter pleading for help, Noemi travels to the Mexican countryside to see the situation for herself. Her cousin lives in her mysterious new husband’s family estate, High Place. The estate is controlled by his elderly father who enforces strict rules on all the residents. Noemi knows she is a stranger who is not welcome at High Place. The longer she stays at the house the more she notices, from her cousin's unexplained illness to the mysterious nightmares Noemi begins having.
Thrilling and dark, this novel takes many twists and turns that keep you on your feet. This is also a great work that reimagines gothic tropes with a strong woman taking the lead of her own story and fighting to protect those she loves. The novel can be distressing at times, and has some gore if you’re more sensitive to those things. After reading you will be dreaming about the things that go bump in the night and live under your bed!
Things to check out: the author has made a playlist available on Spotify that she created based on the book. It makes for perfect background music to set the scene and create a dark and gothic atmosphere at home, even if you’re not spending your time traipsing around the dark hallways of a (possibly) haunted house.
